Clicking noise when I turn the wheel, is this a driveshaft problem?
I usually just lurk on forums, but this one has me worried enough to finally write. I drive a 2016 QX80 and for the past ten days there has been a clicking sound every time I turn the steering all the way, like when I park in a tight spot at the mall. At first I thought a small stone was stuck somewhere, so I ignored it. But yesterday I felt a shake coming through the floor when I pushed the pedal on the highway, around 110 or so, and it went away when I let go. Then in the evening I heard a dull clunk when I shifted from park to drive. I got down and looked under the front, and one of the rubber covers near the wheel looked torn with some black grease thrown around it. I am not a car guy at all, but I think that grease should stay inside. My uncle says it is a CV joint and not a big deal. My neighbor says it is the driveshaft itself and the whole thing needs changing, which sounded expensive. I tried to understand it by reading, and I found a page from a workshop in Mussafah that explained how the driveshaft sends power from the gearbox to the wheels, and how the joints and boots wear out with time. It was written in simple words, so I got the basic idea, but it did not tell me how to know which part is actually bad in my car. Last night I even searched for Trusted Infiniti driveshaft repair in Abu Dhabi because I did not want to give my car to just anyone, since this feels like a part where a wrong job could be dangerous at speed. So now I have a few questions for people who went through this. Is it possible to replace only the boot if I catch it early, or once the grease is gone the joint is already finished? How can I tell if the noise is from the joint or from something else like a wheel bearing? Does the shake at high speed always mean the driveshaft, or can it be tires and balance? Also, if I keep driving for a few more days, can something break suddenly? I use the highway every day for work, so that scares me a little. And about the parts, do you go for original or is a good aftermarket one fine? Someone told me cheap ones start clicking again after a few months, and I do not want to do the job twice. How long did your repair take, and what did it cost roughly? I only want a fair idea so I am not cheated. Last thing, after the repair do they need to check the alignment or do any road test? Thanks for reading, any real story will help me.
